Definition of cardiology
Cardiology is the discipline dealing with disorders of the heart and blood vessels. Cardiology is the study of cardiovascular illness, the care of all things related to the heart. Cardiology also includes arteries and is used to diagnose and treat conditions. Cardiology is the discipline that researches, diagnoses and treats heart injuries and diseases as well as their causes. This discipline is commonly divided in the following branches
- Congenital heart defects
- Coronary artery disease
- Heart failure
- Valvular heart disease
- Electrophysiology
Physicians specializing in this field of medicine are called cardiologists. Cardiologists should not be confused with cardiac surgeons who are the surgeons who perform cardiac surgery.
Basic structure of the heart
The heart is a fist shaped, muscular organ in vertebrates, responsible for pumping blood through the blood vessels by repeated, rhythmic contractions, or a similar structure in annelids, molluscs, and arthropods. The heart is composed of cardiac muscle, an involuntary muscle tissue which is found only within this organ.
- Epicardium describes the outer layer of heart tissue
-
The pericardium is a double-walled sac that contains the heart and the roots of the great vessels
-
The Myocardium is the muscular tissue of the heart
-
The papillary muscles of the heart serve to limit the movements of the mitral and tricuspid valves
-
The endocardium is the innermost layer of tissue that lines the chambers of the heart
-
The coronary circulation consists of the blood vessels that supply blood to and from the heart muscle itself
-
The heart valves are valves in the heart that maintain the unidirectional flow of blood by opening and closing depending on the difference in pressure on each side
The circulatory system
The circulatory system is an organ system that moves substances to and from cells; it can also help stabilize body temperature and pH While the most primitive animal phyla lack circulatory systems, some invertebrate groups have open circulatory system. Vertebrates have a closed circulatory system.
Pulmonary circulation
Pulmonary circulation is the portion of the cardiovascular system which carries oxygen-depleted blood away from the heart, to the lungs, and returns oxygenated blood back to the heart.
Oxygen-depleted blood from the body leaves the right heart through the pulmonary arteries, which carry it to the lungs, where red blood cells release carbon dioxide and pick up oxygen during respiration. The oxygenated blood then leaves the lungs through the pulmonary veins, which return it to the left heart, completing the pulmonary cycle. The blood is then distributed to the body through the systemic circulation before returning to the pulmonary circulation.
